Angela Mackenzie - Founder, and Show Choir Leader for Banstead, Dorking and West Byfleet
I LOVE SINGING!!! I’ve been doing it all my life, firstly as an amateur, then as a professional opera singer, singing teacher and Workshop Leader.
Show Choir was my dream, and I’m so thrilled that I started it - now everybody, no matter what their musical background, can come along and have as much fun as I’ve had singing and performing!A bit of name-dropping….!
After gaining my Music Degree and teaching qualifications, I've had a great time singing for a living! I loved working with fabulous singers, musicians and directors at The Royal Opera, House, Covent Garden under the direction of Antonio Pappano, singing a solo role in Sweeney Todd, as well as singing alongside legends such as Placido Domingo, covering roles and singing in the chorus. I have had the pleasure of singing at the BBC Proms at The Royal Albert Hall, have been directed by Sir Trevor Nunn and sung under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle at the Saltzburg Festival. I worked in Bayreuth in Germany, and reached the finals of The Wagner competition here in London.
I’ve even performed on the West End, singing the role of Katisha at the Savoy Theatre; toured the USA with ‘The Merry Widow'; as well as running my own touring opera company, and singing on the QE2 Millennium Caribbean Cruise!
I LOVE TEACHING SINGING TOO!! In addition to individual singing lessons, I have taught singing on the Performing Arts Courses at Guildford College, worked as Surrey Area Leader for the National Sing Up Programme, and as Vocal Leader for Surrey Arts with whom I conducted a choir of over 300 at the Royal Albert Hall, phew!!!
Since starting Show Choir, I’ve produced and Artistically Directed Shows at Dorking Halls, and The Adrian Mann Theatre, as well as conducting Show Choir in Surrey and Sussex! I was thrilled to take 77 people to sing at Disneyland Paris in 2016 – whatever next!!
Jamie Mackenzie - Show Choir Business and Media Manager
I DIDN’T SING!!! But now I do! Since meeting Angela over 12 years ago, I’ve had a crash course in Musical Theatre and opera appreciation! My performing experience before Show Choir had been as an actor, appearing in The Bill, a short film for The Royal Tournament, and as Elmer in a theatre tour of ‘The Happy Journey’.
After gaining my degree in Graphic Design/New Media, I ran my own Web Design company. On the launch night of the first Show Choir in Banstead, I only came along to help put the chairs out…. I’m still here! The singing bug has got me, and I am now a regular singer - I even sing as part of a trio - The Backchat Boys! In addition to all that singing, I am also the business manager, maintain the website, and design all promotional material for Show Choir!
Steph Parker – Cobham Show Choir Leader
I LOVE SINGING TOO! I joined Show Choir in January 2015 at a time where I was not enjoying my singing anymore. My mum dragged me along to a session i Dorking, and after about 5 minutes, I was hooked! After a couple of singing lessons with Angela, the next thing I knew I was recruited as Show Choir Leader for Cobham!
I come from a musical family, and I’ve always been surrounded by music. Although I can play a bit of piano, my real passion and love has always been singing! I used to do a lot of Amateur Dramatics and performed in My Fair Lady, Scrooge The Musical and Pirates of Penzance as well as playing the role of Maria in West Side Story.
I was also involved in several choirs and with whom I toured and performed at Lake Garda and in Vienna!
After achieving Grade 8 Singing with Trinity College, I studied Vocal and Choral Studies University of Winchester, and although I enjoyed my studies, I found that choral singing was not for me! After re-discovering Musical Theatre at Dorking Show Choir, I fell in love with singing again.
Since working as Show Choir Leader, I have conducted not only the Cobham Show Choir, but most of our choirs at various performances. We’ve performed in, to name a few, “A West End Christmas”, and Choiroke at Dorking Halls, The Charity Variety Show at Epsom Playhouse, as well as numerous outdoor events including The Dorking Christmas Gala Night and Cobham Extravaganza. We’ve even had the privilege of performing at Disneyland Paris!
As well as conducting Cobham Show Choir, I still love performing with Dorking Show Choir!
Sean Peters – Deputy Show Choir Leader
I'M PASSIONATE ABOUT MUSIC AND SINGING, and have been for as long as I can remember! I'm a pianist and organist as well as being Musical Director for choirs and Amateur Dramatic Societies throughout Surrrey and Sussex for over 15 years! These include Dorking’s Loud and Proud Community Choir, The Sowdon Singers Coulsdon, Co-Director of Music at St John the Baptist Church Purely, and Musical Director of St Gertrude’s male voice choir South Croydon.
I’ve enjoyed working as MD on stage productions for the Copthorne Players, and The Archway Theatre Horley for a variety of panto’s and Music Halls.
Last year, I had a great time as Choral Director for Choiroke 2016 at Dorking Halls, conducting a massed choir of 300 singers in a ‘Proms’ finale, and I’m looking forward to returning as Choral Director at Choiroke in the Harlequin Theatre in Redhill!
